When I get dressed, it’s like freestyling.

It never mattered to me that people in school didn’t think that country music was cool, and they made fun of me for it – though it did matter to me that I was not wearing the clothes that everybody was wearing at that moment. But at some point, I was just like, ‚I like wearing sundresses and cowboy boots.‘

If you gonna wear the mohawk, you stick with it. You don’t just be dibby-dabbing. You make up your mind.

I still derive immense pleasure from remembering how many hod-carrying brickies were encouraged to put on lurex tights and mince up and down the high street, having been assured by know-it-alls like me that a smidgen of blusher really attracted the birds.

I’m not trying to be sexy. It’s just my way of expressing myself when I move around.

People ask me where I got my singing style. I didn’t copy my style from anybody.

If I hadn’t been a woman, I’d be a drag queen for sure. I like all that flair and I’d be dressing up in them high heels and putting on the big hair. I’d be like Ru Paul.

Bravery never goes out of fashion.

I like either skinny jeans or the ripped, casual, super-sloppy boyfriend jeans. A lot of ripped jeans. They are so early 2000, but they are so cute, I love them. I love surfer jeans, too!

My clothes are very popular in Japan.

Clothes if they are not well cut, you can kill nobody. A building poorly built can kill people. It’s a much more difficult work. I would not compare myself with that.

Look for the woman in the dress. If there is no woman, there is no dress.

My clothes have always got a very strong dynamic rapport with the body – they are very body conscious, they help you to look glamorous, more hourglass, more woman.

I just dress like… I’m an old black man. Sorry! Like I’m an old Jewish black man. I just dress like it’s still the ’50s.

Stylistically, I love make-up. I love doing my own make-up and stuff, but clothes-wise, I actually didn’t ever really care. Initially the fashion world was more interested in me than the music world, which was strange when I first started singing.

I’m not sure what I think about current fashion, though. A few years ago, I would have said it’s really, really bad and you hardly ever see anybody looking good. There must be some very good designers in the world.

Pop music can absorb so many peculiar talents, ranging from the completely nonmusical poseur who just uses music as a kind of springboard for a sense of style, to people who just love putting all that complicated stuff together, brick by brick, on their computers, to people like me who like playing conceptual games and being surprised.

I’m big on what’s in good taste.

My success comes in making fun of whatever you’re doing. That’s my way.

I dressed more like a pop star, I suppose, rather than the traditional blazer and tall trousers other players went for.

Obviously black matches with everything.

My shopping habits… I am not very brand-conscious about clothes. I buy whatever looks good on me. Likewise, I don’t just shop only in malls or high-end stores.

I like being comfortable at airports, in flip-flops with no jewelry on.

The reason why I wear gold – I wear gold for three reasons. One, when Jesus was born, three wise men came from the east: one brought frankincense, one brought myrrh, the other one brought gold. The second reason I wear gold is I can afford it. The third reason I wear it, it’s symbolic of my African heritage.

The difference between humans and other mammals is that we know how to accessorize.

I’ve worn dresses from all different price ranges, and the thing that couture dresses have in common is that the fit is amazing.

I wouldn’t wear tiny amounts of clothing in my real life so I don’t think it’s necessary to wear that stuff in photo-shoots.

It is an interesting question how far men would retain their relative rank if they were divested of their clothes.
