The genesis of a poem for me is usually a cluster of words. The only good metaphor I can think of is a scientific one: dipping a thread into a supersaturated solution to induce crystal formation. I don’t think I solve problems in my poetry; I think I uncover the problems.
Margaret AtwoodThere are no record companies in Waikiki.
Bruno MarsIt’s easy to make an album full of great songs. But I want people to go for the ride. The songs have to make sense together.
RihannaI enjoy working with complicated equipment. A lot of my things started just with a rhythm box, but I feed it through so many things that what comes out sounds very complex and rich.
Brian EnoWhat turns me on about the digital age, what excited me personally, is that you have closed the gap between dreaming and doing. You see, it used to be that if you wanted to make a record of a song, you needed a studio and a producer. Now, you need a laptop.
BonoFor me, writing a song, I sit down and the process doesn’t really involve me thinking about the demographic of people I’m trying to hit or who I want to be able to relate to the song or what genre of music it falls under.
Taylor SwiftWhen you’re a pop star, it’s a little conservative; you always have to stay in a box. You have fans that are five and fans that are 65; there are so many people wanting so many things.
Beyonce KnowlesTo go indie is a thing. But to put an album in the stores, you need a distribution label.
DrakeI’ve never thought about any kind of prejudice about women in country music because I never felt like it affected me. I was fortunate enough to come about in a time when I didn’t feel that kind of energy at all, and it was always my theory that if you want to play in the same ballgame as the boys, you’ve got to work as hard as them.
Taylor SwiftI’ve choreographed all of my movies.
Jackie ChanWhen I started making my own records, I had this idea of drowning out the singer and putting the rest in the foreground. It was the background that interested me.
Brian EnoMusic is changing so quickly, and the landscape of the music industry itself is changing so quickly, that everything new, like Spotify, all feels to me a bit like a grand experiment.
Taylor SwiftI always tell audiences when I talk about writing: Writing isn’t something I do; writing is something that I am. I am writing – it’s just an expression of me.
Wayne DyerI’ve copyrighted 3,000 songs.
Dolly PartonThere’s more good music being made now than ever before.
David ByrneSo many writers don’t like to write… I like to write, and sometimes I’m afraid I like it too much, because when I get into work, I don’t want to leave it. And as a result, I’ll go for days and days and days without leaving my house.
Harper LeeI love it when people say things to me in public and want to meet me, because I want to meet them! Early on, my manager told me, ‚If you want to sell 500,000 records, then go out there and meet 500,000 people.‘
Taylor SwiftI make a lot of pieces of music that I never release as CDs.
Brian EnoI’ve always tended to write songs prolifically.
David BowieMy brother had written ‚Ocean Eyes,‘ and we recorded it, basing all of the production around contemporary and lyrical dance. I think of most songs that way – if you can’t dance to a song, it’s not a song.
Billie EilishSongwriters, you have to work – you have to wait for residuals. You have to pray that the song’s going to be a hit. And then a year later, you might get a check.
Bruno MarsIf you only believe that you’re an artist when you have a big advance in your pocket and a single coming out, I would say that’s quite soulless. You have to have a sense of your own greatness and your own ability from a very deep place inside you. I am the one with the litmus test in my hands of what people need to hear next.
Lady GagaThat little Miley Cyrus… she’s like a little Elvis. The kids love her because she’s Hannah Montana, but what people don’t realize about her is she is such a fantastic singer and songwriter. She writes songs like she’s 40 years old!
Dolly PartonI might just write a novel next. I don’t know!
Frank OceanI believe the right question to ask, respecting all ornament, is simply this; was it done with enjoyment, was the carver happy while he was about it?
John RuskinI came to California and got signed at a young age. And it’s not like you see in the movies, where you start rubbing shoulders with Timbaland and Pharrell, and you become a giant pop star.
Bruno MarsThe effect of music on fashion has been immense, especially hip-hop and urban music.
The WeekndThe most miraculous process is watching a song go from a tiny idea in the middle of the night to something that 55,000 people are singing back to you.
Taylor SwiftI put out tapes, but I always kept saying, ‚Why am I putting all this energy into these tapes?‘ I was like, ‚I’d rather make just an album because I have a vision; I know how I want to do my records.‘ I always felt like an artist as well.
DJ KhaledI grew up writing songs in my room on GarageBand, and I would make the beats just out of layering my vocals over and over again. Very Imogen Heap-inspired.
Ariana GrandeNow I realize that from ’72 through to about ’76, I was the ultimate rock star. I couldn’t have been more rock star.
David BowieI’ve made over 25 studio albums, and I think probably I’ve made two real stinkers in my time, and some not-bad albums, and some really good albums. I’m proud of what I’ve done. In fact it’s been a good ride.
David BowieWhen my record comes on, you know that’s a DJ Khaled record. That’s my formula, and the people love it.
DJ KhaledI start drawing, and eventually the characters involve themselves in a situation. Then in the end, I go back and try to cut out most of the preachments.
Dr. SeussWhy do I like to write short stories? Well, I certainly didn’t intend to. I was going to write a novel. And still! I still come up with ideas for novels. And I even start novels. But something happens to them. They break up. I look at what I really want to do with the material, and it never turns out to be a novel.
Alice MunroIn hip-hop, there’s not a lot of love. There’s not a lot of love being spread. It’s always like ‚I’m stuntin‘ on you raps, or I’m better than you raps.‘ It’s not a lot of ‚Yo man, I idolize you raps.‘
J. ColeWhen I’m stuck for a closing to a lyric, I will drag out my last resort: overwhelming illogic.
David BowieNearly all the synth work on Heathen is mine and some of the piano.
David BowieI can write a song in about an hour if it’s a simple country song.
Dolly PartonThere’s been a lot of talk about Jack White wanting to work with me, and I’ve always admired him, and of course, he lives in Nashville, too.
Dolly PartonI have always been pushed by the negative. The apparent failure of a play sends me back to my typewriter that very night, before the reviews are out. I am more compelled to get back to work than if I had a success.
Tennessee WilliamsIn Hollywood, a lot of times when something is in development, it just takes a lot of time.
Dwayne JohnsonOver the years I’ve met quite a few big rappers. Then it exploded with 50 Cent, and I did a book with him. It’s always a strange meeting of two worlds, it’s very exciting.
Robert GreeneI think Ye is important to hip-hop.
Nipsey HussleI find rebellion packaged by a major corporation a little hard to take seriously.
David ByrneLooking at 2014, I look back: we made more money off ‚Mailbox Money‘ than we would have made off taking an advance from anybody. We made more money letting our fans buy the stuff directly from us than what any label could have offered us.
Nipsey HussleI think that when you’re making your way up in the music industry, you have all these heroes and the reasons why they are your heroes. As soon as you get into the industry, your guidelines change a little bit. For me, my heroes now are great people first and great artists second.
Taylor SwiftYou get to a certain age, and you are forbidden access. You’re not going to get the kind of coverage that you would like in music magazines; you’re not going to get played on radio, and you’re not going to get played on television. I have to survive on word of mouth.
David BowieI’m a studio rat.
The WeekndEven though I’m known as a pop musician, I have a seriousness about what I do.
Brian EnoPeople think because I’ve got some success, I’ve made it, but in my eyes it’s like, ‚How long has Jay Z been in the business? How many albums has he got?‘ Not that I’m trying to be Jay Z, but I am trying to be around for a long time.
J. ColeI like the idea of a kind of eternal music, but I didn’t want it to be eternally repetitive, either. I wanted it to be eternally changing. So I developed two ideas in that way. ‚Discreet Music‘ was like that, and ‚Music for Airports.‘ What you hear on the recordings is a little part of one of those processes working itself out.
Brian EnoThe imminent demise of the large record companies as gatekeepers of the world’s popular music is a good thing, for the most part.
David ByrneI’ve had big record label presidents look me in the face and say, ‚Your music sucks, you don’t know who you are, your music is all over the place, and we don’t know how to market this stuff. Pick a lane and come back to us.‘
Bruno MarsIf I could, I would not do anything else. I’d just be in the studio for my whole life. I would never go to parties, events, and red carpets. I would rather just be in the studio for the whole time. I don’t even care. Nobody has to know what I look like. I just want to make music.
Ariana GrandeA producer gets the whole vision done from top to bottom, to making the record to having the record delivered to the world. That’s a producer.
DJ KhaledReggaeton is something else – it is part of pop culture. It is something very big that I don’t believe will ever die.
Bad BunnyI don’t know anything about music. In my line you don’t have to.
Elvis PresleyShe’s a total professional, a diva, a mega-star, not just in music but in the entertainment industry. You always learn from the greats, and J.Lo is one.
Bad BunnyUsually, when you go in to make a record, you have 30 songs, and you record 30 of them, and 12 of them make it to the record.
Dave Grohl
