My concerts are about me being very private in public, but I’m very protective.

That’s when it becomes a business. When you’ve been public a long time, when it’s a career. You do certain films, you sell them.

I could never give relationship advice to anybody!

You create a community with music, not just at concerts but by talking about it with your friends.

There are certain things that bother me and certain things that don’t. Personal attacks on me? I think I’m just so used to it.

I’m not comfortable being around too many people. I don’t like being out in public too much. I don’t like going to bars. I don’t like doing celebrity stuff. So most of the characters I play are people who don’t always feel comfortable beyond their small circle of friends.

There is no private life which has not been determined by a wider public life.

The first mistake in public business is the going into it.

Art should never try to be popular. The public should try to make itself artistic.

Phish and Dave Matthews really know their audiences and really treat them well.

I look out at the stadiums full of people and see them all knowing the words to songs I wrote. And curling their hair! I remember straightening my hair because I wanted to be like everybody else, and now the fact that anybody would emulate what I do? It’s just funny. And wonderful.

I have no problem if someone wants to hug me – if I know him!

I do probably 60 concerts a year in the States. And I go out to clubs in the week. I’m doing new stuff all the time.

In order for me to be successful… In order to be a great artist – musician, actor, painter, whatever – you must be able to be private in public at all times. That is what we do.

After coming into contact with a religious man I always feel I must wash my hands.

I have never used Auto-Tune in a live television performance, and I have never used Auto-Tune in any of my concerts. That is a promise.

The answer I found is you stay away from the people who make fun of you, and you join these ad hoc groups who understand your craziness.

Anonymous comments? You’re not in the arena, man. If you can’t say it to me in person in front of my kids, don’t say it.

The public is a ferocious beast; one must either chain it or flee from it.

You have to be careful about how much you reveal to people that look up to you so much.
