I try to be vegan… I really, really try. I don’t eat any red meat, and the whole animal thing really upsets me, so I’ve tried.

A few years ago, the city council of Monza, Italy, barred pet owners from keeping goldfish in curved bowls… saying that it is cruel to keep a fish in a bowl with curved sides because, gazing out, the fish would have a distorted view of reality. But how do we know we have the true, undistorted picture of reality?

I care not much for a man’s religion whose dog and cat are not the better for it.

I did this book ‚Harvest for Hope,‘ and I learned so much about food. And one thing I learned is that we have the guts not of a carnivore, but of an herbivore. Herbivore guts are very long because they have to get the last bit of nutrition out of leaves and things.

Of course, animals have to be killed for food or to prevent their doing injury to others or to property. But such killing is too often carried out without regard to the pain inflicted.

Animals are my friends… and I don’t eat my friends.

If we could establish a deep abiding relationship with nature, we would never kill an animal for our appetite; we would never harm, vivisect, a monkey, a dog, a guinea pig for our benefit. We would find other ways to heal our wounds, heal our bodies.

I have become vegan – I don’t take dairy or meat. It has helped me a lot in terms of recovery and digestion.

Being a vegan is a first-world phenomenon, completely self-indulgent.

It’s okay to eat fish because they don’t have any feelings.

I love to go to the zoo. But not on Sunday. I don’t like to see the people making fun of the animals, when it should be the other way around.
