I love watching track and field – the 4×100 relay, the 100-(meter) dash, the 200-(meter) dash. To see what they’re able to do, I love watching that.

I love football and the intensity of football in Liverpool, this is what is very good for me.

When I was playing, there were always lots of teams in contention for the league – Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, Leeds. Every week was a big game and a big battle.

I’m not going to lie; listen, I’m nice at basketball.

The old Dodgers were something special, but of my teammates overall, there was nobody like Pee Wee Reese for me.

Football is big business – you can’t get away from it. But you have to separate that side from the playing.

When I was in Portugal I hardly played six-or-seven matches. Although I would train daily to keep my shape. Even then it was really difficult when I came back to get in shape and represent my country.

If you made me the national commissioner of football, I’d tell you one thing that I would mandate. The second Saturday in September, we’re going to have conference day. Everybody from the SEC plays a Big 12 team. Everybody from the Big Ten is going to play the ACC. Everybody from the Big East is going to play the Pac-10.

Talking to a player helps, but in our sport the majority of learning happens from watching another player. You pick up things like being punctual, being nice to everyone, making sure you give your 100 per cent even in training.

All the top players in the world play 45-50-60 games. You need that many games, even the strikers need that many games.

You want me to own a team and deal with these rich, spoiled stubborn athletes, and try to get them to perform? No thank you.

Football (soccer) is a matter of life and death, except more important.

As a kid, I used to see how Sachin Tendulkar used to win matches under pressure for India in Sharjah or other places. So I was always keen to repeat the same in similar situations. I don’t take pressure on myself when I am in the middle. I love pressure, and I always believe that pressure makes you more focused.

The worst thing is for a player to come to a club and not be able to play.

The bat is not a toy, it’s a weapon. It gives me everything in life, which helps me to do everything on the field.

I don’t really focus on these things – on what tags are given to me or what people think of me off the field – stuff like that. My main focus is always to do well on the field for the Indian cricket team. When people say good things about me off the field, I am more than happy to accept them.

So like any football or basketball coach, you always always believe you’re going to win.

The best thing about the Kentucky Derby is that it is only two minutes long. It is the quickest event in sports, except for Sumo-wrestling & Mike Tyson fights. Maybe Drag-racing is quicker, but I have never been attracted to it.

How you played in yesterday’s game is all that counts.

I have to admit, I sometimes wonder how much more successful I would have been as a coach had it not been for my spending summers on the golf course. I could have watched more film, that’s for sure. One advantage Joe Paterno had over me was that he didn’t play golf.

What a great day for football, all we need is some green grass and a ball.

Duke is an ugly word in Kentucky. Nothing in the world compares to the joy of beating those hateful swine from Duke.

I do think coaches need to get away from the game more, though. It’s good for them.

You know, God gave me a gift to do other things besides play the game of basketball.

Fighting football, not serenity football – that is what I like.

I am a professional sportswriter, among other things, and I take the games seriously. It is only one of my many powerful addictions, and I don’t mind admitting any of them.

Be a player; don’t play yourself. And don’t play basketball. That’s not your sport, Jeb Bush.
