How many famous and high-spirited heroes have lived a day too long?

The quality, not the longevity, of one’s life is what is important.

You see the film, you might be entertained, and if it’s not a great film, it loses its power very quickly. I think even simply acceptable books stay with us a lot longer.

Mandela’s heroism is the heroism of a man who suffered so badly for what he thought of as freedom. And yet when he had the upper hand he has this incredible self-control and these incredible leadership qualities.

There’s one advantage in having been around as long as I have. Everybody in the Senate knows me, and – I’m going to say something presumptuous, to repeat myself – I think most respect me.

You can live to be a hundred if you give up all the things that make you want to live to be a hundred.

Don’t get old, if you can avoid it.

Work as if you were to live a hundred years. Pray as if you were to die tomorrow.

I intend to live forever, or die trying.

Fortunately for a quarterback, you can play for a long time because you don’t get hit very often.

Books constitute capital. A library book lasts as long as a house, for hundreds of years. It is not, then, an article of mere consumption but fairly of capital, and often in the case of professional men, setting out in life, it is their only capital.

We have been so successful in the past century at the art of living longer and staying alive that we have forgotten how to die. Too often we learn the hard way. As soon as the baby boomers pass pensionable age, their lesson will be harsher still.

Actor’s life is very long.

You get a reputation for stability if you are stable for years.

I figure I’ll be champ for about ten years and then I’ll let my brother take over – like the Kennedys down in Washington.
