‚Getting smart on crime‘ does not mean reducing sentences or punishments for crimes.

I think the FBI is the premier law enforcement agency in all of human history.

For centuries the death penalty, often accompanied by barbarous refinements, has been trying to hold crime in check; yet crime persists. Why? Because the instincts that are warring in man are not, as the law claims, constant forces in a state of equilibrium.

When you go to your local police officer, your police chief in the town you live in, big or small, he will tell you the vast majority of the weapons recovered at a crime scene are either stolen weapons, and/or they have been ‚lost‘ or stolen.

Should surveillance be usable for petty crimes like jaywalking or minor drug possession? Or is there a higher threshold for certain information? Those aren’t easy questions.

I’m prepared to say that law enforcement should be allowed to seize the guns of those who are suspected to be involved in domestic terrorism.

We need to recognize that the situation in Ferguson speaks to broader challenges that we still face as a nation. The fact is, in too many parts of this country, a deep distrust exists between law enforcement and communities of color. Some of this is the result of the legacy of racial discrimination in this country.

Here’s what I believe, I think the FBI is the premier law enforcement agency in the history of the world but i think there was some bad apples over there.

I think most defense attorneys know, to some extent, their clients are guilty.

Two million felons have tried to buy a gun and, because of the background check, have been denied.

An unjust law is itself a species of violence. Arrest for its breach is more so.

I think one of the great things about the United States has been our ability to maintain a distinction between our military and domestic law enforcement.

Ninety-nine percent of the men and women of the FBI… are just professionals. I don’t want Americans, if an FBI agent knocks on their door, to have to be worried about well, is he a Democrat or a Republican? He’s an FBI agent.

The majority of my interactions with police were not good. There were a few good ones who were actually protecting the community. But then you have ones from the Valley. They never met me in their life, but since I’m a kid in basketball shorts and a white T-shirt, they wanna slam me on the hood of the car. Sixteen years old.

Don’t hire a prison consultant.

Punishment is the last and the least effective instrument in the hands of the legislator for the prevention of crime.

One way to make sure crime doesn’t pay would be to let the government run it.

With the advent of DNA, we know that people have been convicted and sentenced to death who later proved not to be guilty of the crime.

Generally speaking, the public appetite for criminal justice policy is just tough talk.

And so I would not enforce a law that would reject people and turn them away without giving them a fair and due process to determine if we should give them asylum and refuge.

The illegal we do immediately. The unconstitutional takes a little longer.

How accurately can the law fix the crime? There has to be a mechanism for very fast action. The law is like this: catch them and punish them.

The FBI should not be a political body.

Let’s be clear about this, and let’s be clear: we should not be creating incentives to house people in prison. We should be creating incentives instead to shut the revolving door into prison.

The IRS! They’re like the Mafia, they can take anything they want!

States should have the right to enact laws… particularly to end the inhumane practice of ending a life that otherwise could live.

Algorithms diminish public safety in this country. They ask us to pretend that lengthy arrest records and violent crimes don’t matter. They ask police to scoop up the bad guys only for the courts to immediately release them. They turn us into a bad joke.

We must reject the idea that every time a law’s broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.

The act of policing is, in order to punish less often, to punish more severely.

Most states in the union where the death penalty is theoretically on the books don’t have executions.

I don’t like jail, they got the wrong kind of bars in there.

Over the course of my career in law enforcement, I have witnessed over and over again the selflessness and sacrifice of law enforcement who lay their lives on the line every day to protect people who they will never meet and people who will never know their names.

For any young democracy, the most difficult but important step is burying the legacy of tyranny and establishing an economy and a government and institutions that abide by the rule of law. Every country faces challenges to the rule of law, including my own.

To be smart on crime, we should not be in a position of constantly reacting to crime after it happens. We should be looking at preventing crime before it happens.

I grew up with J. Edgar Hoover. He was the G-man, a hero to everybody, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation was the big, feared organization. He was ahead of his time as far as building up forensic evidence and fingerprinting. But he took down a lot of innocent people, too.

The policemen or soldiers are only a gun in the establishments hand. They make the racist secure in his racism.

Laws too gentle are seldom obeyed; too severe, seldom executed.

None of my peers avoided prison. None of ‚em.

Should there be cameras everywhere in outdoor streets? My personal view is having cameras in inner cities is a very good thing. In the case of London, petty crime has gone down. They catch terrorists because of it. And if something really bad happens, most of the time you can figure out who did it.

There are certain age limits on police officers. They’d have retired me out at 65.

The appropriate response to terrorist crimes is police work, which has been successful worldwide.

I never sympathise with the accused unless there’s a chance the accused is not guilty, but I certainly don’t ever sympathise with the criminal.

Understand, our police officers put their lives on the line for us every single day. They’ve got a tough job to do to maintain public safety and hold accountable those who break the law.

Justice is expensive in America. There are no Free Passes… You might want to remember this, the next time you get careless and blow off a few Parking Tickets. They will come back to haunt you the next time you see a Cop car in your rear-view mirror.
