Advertising is the art of convincing people to spend money they don’t have for something they don’t need.

I’ve done many ads because that’s my new career. It’s an inspiring extension for my mind.

I would never do a commercial if I thought it was offensive to anyone.

I feel like everything we do comes down to how it looks. Even no branding is branding. For example, you had no face or image to put to my music at first. That was branding.

I think that every artist – or anybody that’s in business – could benefit from a direct-to-consumer strategy, so I think that that applies to us as artists and content creators, too.

If advertisers spent the same amount of money on improving their products as they do on advertising then they wouldn’t have to advertise them.

There are some teams and logos you see, no matter where you are in the world, and you know exactly who they are and what they mean.

Steve Jobs‘ ability to focus in on a few things that count, get people who get user interface right, and market things as revolutionary are amazing things.

We only need so much to survive, but this world we live in tells us we need more stuff to be happy. We’re inundated with our televisions, the Internet and advertising that says in order to be happy you have to have these things. When you say, ‚Gimme, gimme, gimme,‘ you will always be in short supply.

Your premium brand had better be delivering something special, or it’s not going to get the business.

Be willing to use yourself to get out there and put the company on the market. If you have to make a fool of yourself, make a fool of yourself, but make sure that you end up on the front pages, not the back pages. In time, it’s possible that your company will stand out from the crowd, and you’ll be successful.

A lot of advertising has gotten worse. I think it’s kind of lost its nerve, to be honest with you. I feel like the advertising of the ’60s, they were nervier. You know why? Because there was less at stake.

A brand for a company is like a reputation for a person. You earn reputation by trying to do hard things well.

Competitions are a business, first and foremost.

Advertising is the rattling of a stick inside a swill bucket.

We were told our campaign wasn’t sufficiently slick. We regard that as a compliment.

Advertising works most effectively when it’s in line with what people are already trying to do. And people are trying to communicate in a certain way on Facebook – they share information with their friends, they learn about what their friends are doing – so there’s really a whole new opportunity for a new type of advertising model within that.

Any time an investment company has to spend heavily on advertising, it’s probably a bad business in which to invest.

I suppose Virgin is an unusual brand in that I suspect we’re the only ‚way of life‘ brand in the world. We’re one of maybe the top 30 best known brands in the world, yet if you look at the other 29, they all specialize in one area. Whether it’s Google, Coca-Cola, Microsoft, etc., they all generally specialize in one area.

To me, we’re marketing hope.

I always loved advertising. If I hadn’t been in fashion, I’d have been in advertising.

Every successful businessman will have experienced set-backs and failures – they’re lying if they say they haven’t. Virgin has had some tremendously successful businesses and some that have not quite worked out. Virgin Cola springs to mind – the product wasn’t distinct enough from Coca-Cola.

As I see it, fast food outfits have targeted small children with their advertising in a very effective way. You know, it’s clowns and kid’s toys and bright colors and things like that.
