For my part, it was Greek to me.

Big stuff and little: learning how to order breakfast in a country where I don’t speak the language and haven’t been before – that’s really satisfying to me. I like that.

As a medical doctor, I have known the face of adversity. I have seen much of death and dying, suffering and sorrow. I also remember the plight of students overwhelmed by their studies and of those striving to learn a foreign language. And I recall the fatigue and frustration felt by young parents with children in need.

In human intercourse the tragedy begins, not when there is misunderstanding about words, but when silence is not understood.

I can’t relate to lazy people. We don’t speak the same language. I don’t understand you. I don’t want to understand you.

Part of what confuses people in times of upheaval is that you’re getting so many different points of view and directions and so and so, how to do this and do that. And a lot of it is written in a language that honestly most people cannot understand.

Each day we understand better what the Indians say, and they us, so that very often we are intelligible to each other.

A mistake is to commit a misunderstanding.

Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will.

There are so many people in the world who cannot read English or French or whatever.
